Analyzing the Differences Between Medium-Frequency and High-Frequency Furnaces from Five Perspectives

The medium-frequency furnace is a type of induction furnace. Induction furnaces can be classified into three categories based on the frequency of the alternating current they use: power-frequency furnaces, medium-frequency furnaces, and high-frequency furnaces.
A medium-frequency furnace is a power device that converts a 50 Hz AC power supply into a medium-frequency current (ranging from above 300 Hz up to 1000 Hz). After rectification, the three-phase industrial-frequency AC is transformed into a DC power source, which is then further converted into an adjustable medium-frequency current. This current flows through capacitors and an induction coil, generating high-density magnetic field lines within the coil. These magnetic lines cut across the metal material inside the coil, inducing significant eddy currents in the metal itself.
So, what’s the difference between a high-frequency furnace and a medium-frequency furnace? Below, we’ll analyze the distinctions between the two furnaces from five key perspectives.
1. Different AC power frequencies are used: Medium-frequency furnaces operate on AC power frequencies ranging from 50 Hz to medium frequency (above 300 Hz up to 10,000 Hz). Power supply devices for high-frequency furnaces typically use current frequencies between 100 and 500 kHz.
2. The higher the frequency, the lower the penetration depth;
3. The effective hardening depth of medium-frequency furnaces ranges from 2 to 10 mm, making them ideal for parts requiring a deep hardened layer. In contrast, high-frequency furnaces achieve an effective hardening depth between 0.5 and 2 mm.
Various metals ranging from 4.5 kg to 60 tons can be melted using medium-frequency furnaces; high-frequency induction heating is suitable for melting precious metals weighing up to 5 kg.
5. Medium-frequency furnaces are large in size but come with mature technology, while high-frequency furnaces are compact, faster, and more affordable. Although both medium- and high-frequency furnaces are commonly used smelting equipment, they differ significantly in terms of price, size, and smelting efficiency.
